Rev. James Kinsey

REFLECTION OF LIFE

Rev. James Weldon Kinsey was born to Horace Kinsey and Cleo Bullock Kinsey on January 11, 1943. James was given the name James Weldon after his mother's favorite African American poet, James Weldon Johnson. He was the fourth of six children: Lafayette, Gertha, Gloria, Alma Jean, and Charlotte, all of whom preceded him in death.

James accepted Christ at an early age and united with St. Rest Baptist Church in Minden, Louisiana, where he remained an active and faithful member until his passing.

James attended Webster High School and graduated with the Class of 1962. He continued his education at Grambling State University, where he earned a degree in Art and Physical Education. He later pursued additional studies in Art at Auburn University. A gifted and passionate artist, James dedicated his talents to both the arts and education. He later became certified in Special Education. He began his teaching career in the East Baton Rouge Parish School System, where he taught for one year before joining the Webster Parish School System. During his more than 30 years of service, he was affiliated with the NEA, LEA, and WEA. He served as an art teacher, football coach, swim instructor and lifeguard and assistant track coach, touching the lives of countless students throughout his career. He was also honored as Teacher of the Year.

In 1984, James was ordained into the ministry. He later became pastor of New Home Baptist Church, where he faithfully provided spiritual leadership for 25 years until his retirement. Following his retirement, he continued his service to the Lord as Interim Pastor of Greater Saint Paul Baptist Church.

James was a brilliant and accomplished artist whose work was exhibited throughout Louisiana. His artwork was displayed at Southern University Shreveport, Grambling State University, Doyline High School, and the Minden Civic Center. He was featured in local and regional newspapers for his creative works in various media, including wood, plaster, metal, salt, and cement. His artistic contributions were exhibited in numerous locations across North Louisiana and were recognized in the Baton Rouge Art Guide.

A dedicated servant of his community, James served as a Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America and was an active father with the Girl Scouts. He was also a member of the NAACP, served as Secretary of the Watchman Fellowship, President of Sewer District No. 1, and was a proud member of the Gamma Omicron Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., where he faithfully served as Keeper of Records and Seals for the chapter. He enjoyed reading the bible and many books about Christ, hunting and fishing.

James met and married the former Linda Costley of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Together, they shared a loving and devoted marriage for 58 years.

James, affectionately known as "Boo Boo," leaves to cherish and honor his memory: his devoted wife, Linda Kinsey; three daughters, Ellanee K. Palmer (Kenny) of Minden, Louisiana; Jamet K. Martin (Sam) of Houston, Texas; and Ursulynn K. Hamilton of Gurnee, Illinois; two grandchildren, Terry (Tre') Hamilton III (Angel) of San Diego, California, and Tiara Jena' Hamilton of Atlanta, Georgia; two great-grandchildren, Christen Grace Marie Hamilton and Kehlani Alysse Hamilton of Sunset, Louisiana; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
